Young at Heart Festival returns to celebrate seniors and sustainability

Tauranga City Council is partnering with Envirohub Bay of Plenty to bring this year’s Young at Heart Festival to life.

From 1–8 October, the week of community-led events will celebrate our older community – parents, grandparents, friends, and neighbours. The festival wraps around the official International Day of Older Persons on Wednesday, 1 October 2025.

Rachael Pratt, Envirohub Bay of Plenty Project Co-ordinator, says this year’s theme, Wise by Nature, encourages thoughtful, everyday choices that support personal wellbeing, strengthen communities, and protect our planet.

“Through engaging activities and meaningful moments, the festival promotes a sustainable and connected way of living,” Rachael says.

Paula Naude, Head of Community Outcomes & Emergency Management at Tauranga City Council, says the Young at Heart Festival is a celebration of ageing with pride, purpose, and joy.

“It’s about recognising the invaluable contributions of our older residents and creating opportunities for connection, creativity, and community spirit. Tauranga City Council is committed to fostering a city where people can age positively, feel respected for their wisdom, and find meaningful ways to stay engaged—whether they’ve lived here for decades or are new to the area,” Paula says.
