Independent review of Mauao landslide

Tauranga Mayor Mahé Drysdale and Council Chief Executive Marty Grenfell have announced that an independent review will be undertaken on all aspects leading up to Thursday’s Mauao landslide.

“The landslide and its impacts on those affected and their families clearly represents a serious and significant incident of local, national and international importance,” Mahé says.

“It is important that we have a clear and accurate understanding of the facts and events leading up to the landslide, so that we can ensure that the future safety of the community is appropriately safeguarded.”

Mahé says the scope of the review; the appropriate expertise to lead the work involved; and timeframe for the delivery of findings are currently being worked through.

“Given the gravity of this tragic situation, it’s important that a person with the requisite skills, experience, and level of public trust is selected.  Key aspects of the review will include establishing and reviewing all relevant facts in the lead-up to the event.”

He adds that the independent review is not intended to replace any other formal processes which may be initiated in due course.

“This review is about establishing the facts independently, given the scale and seriousness of this event. As Council, on behalf of the families and the whole community, we need to understand the facts and ensure that in the lead-up to this tragedy, everything was done that was appropriate in the circumstances.

“It is important to note, that while we work to stand up this review, our immediate focus remains on supporting the families affected and those responsible for the rescue operation.”
