Cyclone Vaianu - Residents urged to avoid travel as Cyclone Vaianu coincides with 2pm high tide

As Cyclone Vaianu continues to impact Tauranga, people are strongly advised not to travel this afternoon unless absolutely necessary or facing immediate danger.

Roads may become unsafe or impassable very quickly.

The most dangerous period will be around 2pm when high tide coincides with the cyclone crossing the city.

For those who have not already self evacuated:

  • If you are not at immediate risk and feel safe, stay where you are and shelter in place during the peak conditions
  • If conditions change or you feel unsafe at any time, act quickly. Move to higher ground or a safer location.

If life is at risk, call 111.
