Established to respond quickly to urgent and unmet needs, the fund was launched with an initial $100,000 contribution from central government, a subsequent $100,000, and further boosted by donations from generous individuals and organisations.
Through the fund, a total of $228,340 was distributed to 39 eligible applicants.
Mayor Mahé Drysdale says the fund was an important way for the city to stand alongside those most affected and thanked those who generously contributed.
“The Tauranga Mayoral Relief Fund was set up to provide practical help for those facing urgent need during this deeply challenging time” Mayor Mahé says.
Although applications to the fund in response to this event have now closed, Tauranga City Council will retain the Mayoral Relief Fund framework for future emergencies as appropriate.
