The programme aims to expand the number of local people with governance experience, while enhancing the diversity and depth of the governance talent pool available to organisations in Tauranga and the wider Bay of Plenty.
This is a valuable opportunity for three aspiring directors to gain hands-on governance experience by interning with one of the following CCOs:
- Bay Venues Limited – Guardian of over 20 community facilities in Tauranga Moana, including Mercury Baypark and Haumaru Sport and Recreation Centre.
- Tauranga Art Gallery Trust – Owns and operates Toi Tauranga Art Gallery with the aim of creating exceptional art experiences that engage, inspire, challenge and educate through exhibitions, public programmes and events.
- Tourism Bay of Plenty – Jointly owned by Tauranga City Council and the Western Bay of Plenty District Council, this organisation leads the sustainable growth of the visitor economy across the sub-region.
The 12-month, voluntary intern roles offer a range of benefits, including:
- the opportunity for aspiring board members to start their governance careers in a supportive environment
- mentoring and professional development training
- the chance to build networks within the organisation and wider community.
To be considered, interns must live in the Tauranga / Western Bay area, demonstrate a strong commitment, motivation and desire to pursue directorship opportunities in the next two to three years, as well as being able to commit enough time to undertake the programme effectively. This is estimated to be around three hours per week.
Since 2022, the internship programme has supported nine interns who have worked alongside the boards of Bay Venues Limited, Tauranga Art Gallery Trust and Tourism Bay of Plenty.
Current Bay Venues Limited Aspiring Director, Carey Manuel, describes being part of the Aspiring Directors Programme as an invaluable experience.
“It has given me first hand exposure to board governance, strategic decision-making and the role directors play in shaping an organisation’s future.
“The chair and directors were incredibly supportive and generous with their time, creating an environment where I felt comfortable contributing, asking questions and learning. The experience has strengthened my governance skills, expanded my professional network and increased my confidence,” says Carey.

Current Tourism Bay of Plenty Aspiring Director, Michelle Redward, says her internship has provided her with a unique insight into board governance within the local government environment.
“It has been both challenging and rewarding, and has deepened my understanding of the important role good governance plays in delivering positive outcomes for our communities.
“Being able to observe discussions, strategic thinking and decision-making processes first hand has broadened my perspective and helped me grow,” says Michelle.
“The programme offered me practical governance experience, valuable connections and the opportunity to contribute while learning from experienced leaders.”
