Upgraded crematorium for Pyes Pā Memorial Park

An upgrade to the Pyes Pā Memorial Park crematorium will introduce a new, larger cremator while also creating a more private, flexible and welcoming space for friends and whānau during one of life’s most sensitive times.

The new cremator will support the city’s future cremation needs in place of the existing, ageing unit that is due for replacement. The building itself has been designed to provide improved gathering spaces and increased ceremony capabilities to support a range of cultural practices, following feedback from community groups during the design development phase.

Tauriko Ward Councillor Marten Rozeboom says the crematorium will serve the community for many years to come.

“This project will deliver an important upgrade and community asset for the city, and ensures Tauranga has a facility that meets the needs of a diverse community.”

The inclusion of a cremation viewing space is a new feature for the site and also provides a comfortable space for smaller services.

The upgraded crematorium will be built in the same location as the existing crematorium at Pyes Pā Memorial Park, with construction scheduled to begin from Monday, 12 October. It’s expected all works will be complete by mid-2027.

A secondary cremator will be in use during the construction period, and cremation and funeral services will operate as normal.
