It’s a major moment for Tauranga. The internationally recognised championship is typically held in Europe, only ever coming to Oceania when Brisbane hosted in 2011.
Deputy Mayor Jen Scoular says bringing an event of this calibre to Tauranga is incredibly exciting.
“Hosting a world championship event in Tauranga is a fantastic vote of confidence in our city as an international venue and destination. We’re welcoming some of the best hip hop dancers in the world, and we get to show them what makes Tauranga special.
“We have a passionate local dance community here and this is a huge opportunity for our rangatahi to be inspired by the talent of these incredible dancers from across the world.
“It’s also our chance to show our manaakitanga and give our international visitors a warm Tauranga welcome.”
The crews will be formally welcomed to the city at an opening ceremony and pōhiri, led by Ngā Pōtiki and Te Wharekura o Mauao.
Event Director, Gemma Laing says the reason Tauranga was chosen is simple.
“We wanted a destination. Somewhere that showcases New Zealand for the beautiful country it is and somewhere that was accessible to Auckland for those flying in internationally.”
Gemma has led the New Zealand operations for the event since 2012, is part of its international technical committee, and has managed Team New Zealand at the world championships for a number of years. She is passionate about providing opportunities through the arts, for youth and young adults to be challenged, be creative, and set big goals and work towards them.
“Hosting the Hip Hop Unite World Championships here is something incredibly special. To give our kiwi crews the rare opportunity to compete on the world stage in front of their families and supporters, is a moment we are incredibly proud of.”
This is the best of the best, the championships bring together the best crews from national qualifying events held around the world throughout the year. Countries from around the world are confirmed to compete, including the Czech Republic, South Africa and Portugal. with dancers, choreographers, judges and supporters all travelling to Tauranga.
Dancers will go head-to-head across a range of divisions, including mini, junior, adult and mega crews, as well as duos and battles.
Gemma says attendees can expect to be blown away.
“The energy, athleticism, creativity and extraordinary talent these dancers bring to the stage is unlike anything else. These are some of the best hip hop dancers in the world, and the power, precision and passion of their performances make for an unforgettable live experience.”
The Hip Hop Unite World Championships is supported by the Tauranga Event Fund, which helps attract and support events that align with the city’s strengths, appeal to residents and visitors, and contribute to a vibrant, welcoming and eventful city year-round.
