The appointment was made at Wednesday’s Council meeting and follows Marty Grenfell’s resignation as Chief Executive on 29 September 2026. Mr Green was subsequently appointed Acting Chief Executive from 2 October until 26 October.
Mayor Mahé Drysdale says the appointment will provide stability and continuity while Council undertakes the recruitment of a permanent Chief Executive.
“Gareth has a strong understanding of both the organisation and the environment we are operating in. He brings strong leadership capability, a fresh perspective and a proven focus on delivery”, says Mayor Drysdale.
“We have a significant programme of work ahead, and Gareth has a clear mandate from Council to maintain momentum, strengthen accountability and progress the organisational improvements we have committed to.”
“His appointment also provides important certainty for the organisation while we undertake a thorough process to find the right person to lead Council permanently.”
"While Gareth’s appointment is in an interim capacity, he has Council’s full support and a clear mandate to lead the organisation with the authority of the Chief Executive, including making the changes he considers necessary to strengthen the organisation and its performance."
Council will work through appropriate arrangements for Mr Green’s substantive role to ensure the organisation retains the leadership and capability it needs during the interim period.
Interim Chief Executive Gareth Green says he welcomes the opportunity to lead the organisation through this important period.
“I acknowledge the confidence the Mayor and Councillors have placed in me. My focus will be on continuing to deliver for our community while progressing the improvements expected across the organisation,” says Mr Green.
“We have important work ahead, including development of Council’s next Long-term Plan. I look forward to working with our capable and committed staff, alongside our Elected Members, to maintain momentum and deliver on the priorities that matter most for Tauranga.”
"Council have made it clear they want a strong focus on serving our people and doing the right thing."
Council also agreed to undertake an open, merit-based recruitment process for a permanent Chief Executive, supported by an independent executive search partner, yet to be appointed.
A Chief Executive Sub-committee, chaired by Mayor Drysdale and comprising Deputy Mayor Scoular, Councillor Morris and Councillor Rozeboom, will oversee the recruitment process and report back regularly to Council.
The final selection and appointment of the permanent Chief Executive, including the term of appointment, remuneration and material employment conditions, will remain a decision of the full Council.
Mayor Drysdale says the recruitment process is currently expected to run through to March 2027, although the timing will be confirmed once the executive search partner is appointed.
“The successful candidate’s start date will naturally depend on their availability and any notice period.”
