Wairoa Bridge cycleway closed indefinitely for design and repair works

The cycleway at Wairoa Bridge will remain closed while repair options and remedial designs are investigated for a damaged portion of the cycleway and embankment.

The cycleway at Wairoa Bridge will remain closed while repair options and remedial designs are investigated for a damaged portion of the cycleway and embankment.

The embankment that supports the cycleway on the south side of the Wairoa Bridge, SH2, was damaged and closed on 27 March after a significant amount of rainfall across January and February resulted in waterlogged soil and slips across Tauranga.

Cyclists can still cross the Wairoa Bridge by using the roadway while the cycleway is closed however all road users should be careful on this route especially as we come into winter conditions. Damage to the embankment only requires a closure to the cycleway, and the road remains safe for vehicles to continue using.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi recently completed geotechnical assessments at site and confirmed funding approval to implement a long-term remedial solution of the slip area and damaged cycleway. Next steps include review of the data, remediation option selection, final design, and construction. An expected construction completion and reopening date will be provided once confirmed.
