Wairoa Bridge not recommended for cycling until repairs complete

Cyclists are advised not to use the Wairoa Bridge on State Highway 2 until repairs are carried out on the cycleway embankment, which has been closed since late March due to damage caused by waterlogged ground and slips.

Tauranga City Council says the bridge has limited road space, high traffic volumes, and vehicle speeds that create an unsafe riding environment. There are currently limited safe alternatives for crossing the bridge.

Cyclists wanting to access the Ōmokoroa cycleway from Tauranga are encouraged to park at the Wairoa River Reserve carpark and begin the cycleway to Ōmokoroa via Wairoa River Road and Te Puna Station Road.

Council is working with NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi on repairs to the damaged section and will provide further updates as work progresses.
